Historic Abandoned Oil Sludge Pit Cleaned Up 

Indiana Oil & Gas Association, Environmental Advisory Board, the Southwest Indiana Brine Coalition
(SWIBC), Four Rivers Resource Conservation & Development, Inc. (RC&D), 10 Southwestern Indiana
SWCDs, the Department of Natural Resources and the Division of Oil and Gas hosted a field day in
Wesphalia, IN (Knox County).

The field day was to demonstrate the successful bioremediation of a 2-acre historic oil sludge pit. 
The SWIBC and Four Rivers RC&D, working under the supervision of Indiana Department of
Environmental Management (IDEM) and the Department of Natural Resources, utilized funding from
EPA/IDEM and DNR grants and with the support of the Indiana Oil & Gas Association, Environmental
Advisory Board, accomplished the first remediation project of an oil or gas pit    in the State of Indiana.
