SOIL EROSION PREVENTION RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR PROPOSED  KUDZU ERADICATION SITES
 IN VANDERBURGH COUNTY

HOME

Site #1:  Stringtown and Petersburg Road
Part of NE ¼ of Sec. 5  T-6-S / R-10-W
Situated in Evansville close to business and residential
Soil type is predominantly Wellston Silt Loam (WeE2) with 18% to 25% slopes considered eroded with low fertility.

Concerning the re-vegetation of this site, proper lime and fertilizer rates are essential in obtaining a good stand of vegetation to prevent bare soil from eroding.  Soil tests are recommended to provide adequate nutrients and proper pH.

The following seeding recommendations are appropriate for this site:

Species                                  Lbs. / Acre (pls)                   Seeding dates___________
Tall Fescue                                       35                                August 1 to September 30
Annual or Perennial Rye              10

All recommendations are based on Pure Live Seed (pls).

If possible, straw mulch applied at a rate of 1.5 tons per acre, or erosion control blanket, 1-ply netting sewn to straw, should be applied, especially on the steeper bare portions of this site.

Site #2:  Mesker Park and Wimberg Road across from Mesker Amphitheater
Part of S ½ of Sec. 14  T-6-S / R-11-W
Situated on land owned by the City of Evansville, this is a large (8 acre) site with a golf course and other public lands abutting.
Soil type is predominantly Wellston Silt Loam (WeE2) with 18% to 25% slopes, considered eroded with low fertility.

Concerning the re-vegetation of this site, proper lime and fertilizer rates are essential in obtaining a good stand of vegetation to prevent bare soil from eroding.  Soil tests are recommended to provide adequate nutrients and proper pH.  Because this is a public site in a park situation with interest in increasing a more natural setting, native grasses are provided as an option in the recommended seeding at this site.

The following seeding recommendations are appropriate for this site:

Species                                  Lbs. / Acre (pls)                   Seeding dates
Tall Fescue                                       35                                August 1 to September 30
Annual or Perennial Rye              10
Or
Switch grass and                            10                                April 15 to May 30
Red Top                                              2

If possible, straw mulch applied at a rate of 1.5 tons per acre, or erosion control blanket, 1-ply netting sewn to straw, should be applied, especially on the steeper bare portions of this site.

Site #3:  NE side of South Red Bank Road, south of Hwy 62 (Lloyd Expressway)
Part of NW ¼ of Sec. 27  T-6-S / R-11-W
Situated in a residential area with two land owners.  There is a grass that is out-competing the kudzu in the more open areas.  Could not identify the grass species at the time of the site visit.    Soil type is predominantly Wellston (WeF) with 25% to 50% slopes; a very steep site.

Concerning the re-vegetation of this site, proper lime and fertilizer rates are essential in obtaining a good stand of vegetation to prevent bare soil from eroding.  Soil tests are recommended to provide adequate nutrients and proper pH.   Maintaining existing ground cover of grasses will go a long way in preventing erosion.
