River Friendly Farmer Award
Environmental stewardship is the focus behind the River Friendly Farmer Award, a
program established in 1999. It is designed to recognize farmers who protect and
enhance Indiana’s rivers, lakes and streams by using sound cropping and
livestock management practices in their operations.
Vanderburgh County SWCD recognized Joe Steinkamp in 2006 as their River
Friendly Farmer. He is one of the men in Indiana who makes decisions based on
the impact their choices will have on the environment. Economic viability is
certainly an important criterion as well, but River Friendly Farmer winners also
know that a healthy environment only sets the stage for a farm’s healthy overall
bottom line….not to mention the legacy it leaves for future generations.
Joe cash grain farms growing all white corn, round-up ready soybeans and some
winter wheat. He has put in grass waterways, grass filter strips, erosion
control structures and no-till plants his crops. He follows the criteria for
nutrient management, nitrogen best management practices for our region,
pesticide management, non-cropland area management and keep records on his farm
operation to track inputs and conservation practices.
CONGRATULATION JOE!
