SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR FOR SOUTHWEST INDIANA

The award was given to David Ellison,
Vanderburgh County SWCD board chairman for
Southwest Indiana at the Annual Conference in Indianapolis.
David was asked to serve as an Associate
Supervisor on the Vanderburgh SWCD Board
meetings on his farm to further the implementation of no-till and conservation
practices in his
neighborhood. He has installed water and sediment control basins, grassed
waterways, grade
stabilization structures and filter strips to solve severe erosion problems and
improve downstream
water quality issues.
David started as an Associate Supervisor on the
board in January 1996 and in February 1997
was elected supervisor. Since then he has served as Vice-Chairman and
Chairman. He is
currently leading the Soil and Water Resource Committee for the SWCD board in
addition to
being chairman. Dave attends County Commissioner and County Council meetings
and knows
many members both professionally and personally. He represented the South
Southwest area
as director on the Indiana Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts
board from 2003
through 2005.
David was born and grew up in Evansville, moved
out on the farm when he married a Vanderburgh
County farmer’s daughter. The farm had been in the family for generations and
David was accepte
as a farm partner from the start. When farming was no longer possible for his
wife’s father Dave
took on the farming responsibility and according to his family and neighbors did
an excellent job.
David has been active in the farming and urban
community from the start. He served as Vice-
President, President and member of the Big Creek Drainage Association,
Vice-Preside
Soybean board, County Committee member for the Farm Service Agency and member of
the
Warrick Co. Co-op board for 12 years. He served on the Pigeon Creek Greenway
strategic plan-
ning committee and was a member of the Evansville City Parks Board for six
years.
