WATER QUALITY:  We All Live Downstream

Soil is the number one pollutant in Water.  When soil erodes it takes associated nutrients and pollutants into the water with it This is why controlling erosion is a large part of improving water quality.  Some ways Vanderburgh Co. SWCD is impacting water quality includes:

RIVERWATCH—Vanderburgh Co. SWCD is involved in  a Statewide Water Quality testing program that includes chemical testing and macro-invertebrate inventory.
BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES—“BMP’S” include no-till farming, conservation cover, waste (manure) and nutrient management.  These insure the soil and nutrients stay out of the water.  See us about which will work best for you. Call Darrell Rice, District Conservationist ((812) 867-0729)
WATERSHED PROGRAMS—We all live in a watershed.  The Barr Creek Watershed Lake and River Enhancement project is cost sharing on erosion control practices on agricultural land to improve Barr Creek water quality.  The Pigeon Creek Watershed had an ongoing program to educate land users, and implement BMP’s to improve water quality.
WETLANDS—Wetlands purify water and provide storage and wildlife habitat.  Wetland restoration and improvement are part of the SWCD’s goals to enhance water quality.
